Assistive Technology and Libraries

Assistive technology, also known as adaptive technology, is made for  helping people with learning, visual, hearing or physical disabilities access information.  Some of the types of devices and services the library offers to individuals with special needs are to help with their seeing, communication, listening, remembering and reading. Libraries are increasing, maintaining or improving functional capabilities for individuals with disabilities.  On the website of Accessible Media for Pennsylvania says in his article “ Assistive technology (AT) is any item, piece of equipment, software program, or product system that is used to increase, maintain, or improve the functional capabilities of persons with disabilities.” Assistive technology can be as simple as a communication board made with cardboard and felt to electronic devices. The goal is to help individuals with disabilities.
